Where to get the best Riesling in the United States (Hint: Finger Lakes)

The United States is home to several excellent wine regions that produce high-quality Riesling.

What makes a good Riesling? A good Riesling is characterized by its balance of fruitiness, acidity, and minerality. Factors such as ripeness, terroir, soil type, climate, and winemaking techniques all play a role in the quality and character of the wine. Sweetness level can range from bone dry to lusciously sweet, and the wine should have the right balance of acidity and fruitiness to reflect the unique terroir of the region where it was grown.

Here are some of the best places to get Riesling in the U.S:

  1. Finger Lakes, New York: The Finger Lakes region in upstate New York is known for producing some of the best Riesling in the country. The cool climate and unique soil conditions in the area make it ideal for growing this grape variety. (Were you surprised? Of course it's the best region, but I wanted you to know that we are not alone).

  2. Columbia Valley, Washington: The Columbia Valley in eastern Washington is another excellent region for Riesling. The region's warm, dry climate and volcanic soils produce crisp, refreshing Rieslings with bright acidity.

  3. Willamette Valley, Oregon: While Willamette Valley is known primarily for its Pinot Noir, it also produces some excellent Riesling. The region's cooler climate and well-drained soils create a unique terroir that results in vibrant and aromatic Rieslings.

  4. Mosel Valley, Michigan: The Mosel Valley in Michigan is another region that is gaining attention for its Riesling. The area's unique microclimate and mineral-rich soils produce Rieslings with intense fruit flavors and bright acidity.

  5. Texas Hill Country: Texas Hill Country is a rising star in the American wine industry, and it is quickly gaining recognition for its excellent Riesling. The region's hot, dry climate and limestone soils produce Rieslings that are full-bodied and richly flavored.

These regions are a great starting point for exploring this delicious and versatile grape variety in the U.S.
